What is a Car Radio Code?
A car radio code is a 4-digit security PIN built into every factory-installed VAG Group radio (Volkswagen, Audi, Škoda, and SEAT). This anti-theft feature was designed by the manufacturer to make stolen radios useless — when the radio detects a power interruption, it locks itself and displays "SAFE", "1000", or "CODE" on the screen. The radio will not function until the correct 4-digit code is entered.
While the intention was good, this security measure causes a practical problem: any time the car battery is disconnected, replaced, or goes flat, the radio locks. This affects millions of vehicle owners every year during routine maintenance. The code was originally provided on a card with the vehicle documentation, but after years of ownership changes, these cards are frequently lost.
Our online service recovers the original factory-assigned code from the radio's serial number. The code is permanent — it never changes, regardless of how many times the battery is disconnected. Once you have it, write it down and keep it in your glovebox for future use.
Your Radio Shows "SAFE" — What to Do
This is the most common situation. Your VW, Audi, Skoda or SEAT radio is displaying SAFE mode after a battery change or electrical work. Here is the complete step-by-step solution:
Check the display message
If the radio shows "SAFE" or "2 SAFE", the anti-theft lockout is active. If it shows "1000" or four dashes "----", you can enter the code immediately (skip to step 4).
Wait 60 minutes with the radio powered on
Turn the ignition to the ACC position (do not start the engine). Leave the radio on for exactly 60 minutes without pressing any buttons. This is a mandatory security cooldown that cannot be bypassed.
Display changes to "1000"
After 60 minutes, the display automatically changes from "SAFE" to "1000" (or "0000" or "----"). If nothing changes, briefly disconnect the battery for 30 seconds, reconnect, and turn on the radio again.
Enter your 4-digit code
Use the radio preset buttons (1, 2, 3, 4) to set each digit. Each press increments the digit by one. For example, to enter code 4385: press button 1 four times, button 2 three times, button 3 eight times, button 4 five times.
Confirm the code
Press and hold the right arrow ► button (or hold 1+6 together for 2 seconds). The radio will beep once and start working. If it beeps multiple times and returns to "1000", the code was wrong — you have one more attempt before another 60-minute lockout.
Important: You only get 2 attempts before the radio locks again. Do not guess — use our service to get the exact factory code from your serial number. It costs far less than a dealer visit.
How to Find Your Radio Serial Number
The serial number is required to generate your radio code. Here are the methods for each brand:
Volkswagen (serial)
Hold buttons 1+6 simultaneously for 3 seconds. The serial number from the fitted radio label scrolls across the display.
Works on: Golf, Passat, Polo, Tiguan, Touran, Caddy, T5/T6, Jetta, Beetle, Scirocco, Arteon
Audi (serial)
Hold SETUP + RIGHT arrow (or 1+6 on Concert radios) for 3 seconds. The serial is printed on the fitted radio label.
Works on: A1, A3, A4, A5, A6, Q3, Q5, Q7, TT, R8 — Concert, Symphony, Chorus, MMI
Škoda (serial)
Hold buttons 1+6 or 2+6 simultaneously for 3 seconds. The serial is printed on the fitted radio label.
Works on: Octavia, Fabia, Superb, Kodiaq, Karoq, Rapid, Yeti — Bolero, Swing, Amundsen, Columbus
SEAT (serial)
Hold buttons 1+6 or 2+6 simultaneously for 3 seconds. The serial is printed on the fitted radio label.
Works on: Leon, Ibiza, Ateca, Arona, Tarraco, Alhambra, Cupra — Media System, Navi System
Button combination not working?
If no serial number appears, the radio may need to be physically removed. Using radio extraction keys (4 thin metal prongs), carefully pull the unit out. The serial number is printed on a white sticker on the top or side of the metal casing. Take a photo before reinstalling.
Troubleshooting Common Issues
Something not working as expected? Here are the solutions to the most common problems our customers encounter:
Code entered correctly but radio still locked
: Incorrect entry method — the buttons must set each digit individually, not be typed like a phone number.
: Use preset buttons 1–4 to set each digit (pressing repeatedly to reach the right number), then confirm with ► or 1+6. Each button controls one digit position only.
Radio shows "SAFE" and won't accept any input
: Security lockout after 2 failed attempts.
: Leave the radio on (ignition in ACC) for 60 minutes without pressing anything. After the timeout, the display changes to "1000" and you can try again.
No sound from speakers after unlocking
: A speaker connector was accidentally disconnected during battery work or radio removal.
: Remove the radio and check all connectors on the rear are fully seated. The main power harness and the separate speaker connector must both be plugged in firmly.
Serial number shows letters instead of from the fitted radio label/serial/serial/serial
: The radio may be an aftermarket replacement that does not use the VAG code system.
: Our service only works with original factory radios. If your serial starts with a non-standard prefix, the radio was likely replaced with an aftermarket unit that uses a different (or no) security system.
Radio shows "ERROR" instead of "SAFE"
: More than 10 incorrect code attempts, triggering a permanent lockout.
: Disconnect the battery for 30 minutes, reconnect, and wait the full 60-minute cooldown with the radio on. If "ERROR" persists after this, the radio may need a professional EEPROM reset — contact our support team.
