How to Find Your Car Radio Serial Number — VW, Audi, Škoda, SEAT Guide

Why Do You Need the Serial Number?
Every VAG group radio (Volkswagen, Audi, Škoda, SEAT) has a unique serial number that links it to the manufacturer's database. This serial number — not your VIN — is what's needed to generate the correct unlock code for your specific radio unit.
Serial numbers follow a brand-specific format: VWZ for Volkswagen, AUZ for Audi, SKZ for Škoda, and SEZ for SEAT. The full serial is typically 14 characters long.
Method 1: Button Combination (No Removal Needed)
Many VAG radios can display the serial number directly on screen. This is the easiest method and works on most models from 2005 onwards:
- Turn the ignition to the "ON" position (don't start the engine).
- Turn the radio on. If it shows "SAFE" or "CODE", that's fine.
- Press and hold buttons 1 and 6 simultaneously for 3–5 seconds.
- The display will cycle through several codes. Look for the one starting with VWZ, AUZ, SKZ, or SEZ.
Alternative: On some older models, try holding buttons 2 and 5 instead. On Audi Concert/Symphony systems, press and hold FM1 and FM2.
Method 2: Physical Label on the Radio Unit
If the button combination doesn't work, the serial number is always printed on a label attached to the radio housing:
- You'll need radio removal keys (available at auto parts stores for €5–10, or use two thin metal strips).
- Insert the keys into the four holes on the radio faceplate.
- Gently pull the radio out about 5 cm — you don't need to disconnect any cables.
- Look for a white or silver sticker on the top or side of the unit.
- The serial number is the 14-character code starting with VWZ/AUZ/SKZ/SEZ.
Method 3: Vehicle Documentation
Some dealers record the radio serial in the vehicle service booklet at the time of purchase. Check:
- The original radio code card (a small credit-card-sized card)
- The vehicle service booklet or owner's manual
- Purchase documents from the dealership
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Confusing serial with part number: The part number (e.g., 1K0 035 186) is NOT the serial number. Look specifically for the VWZ/AUZ/SKZ/SEZ prefix.
- Misreading characters: O (letter) vs 0 (zero), I (letter) vs 1 (one). Take a clear photo in good lighting.
- Using the VIN instead: VIN-based code retrieval is unreliable for VAG radios. Always use the radio serial number.
